The Government of Canada has committed $15 million in new capital to support women entrepreneurs to survive amid the ongoing economic crisis brought by COVID-19. The $15 million comes in the form of additional capital for Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES) Ecosystem Fund organizations. The funding will go directly to select organizations that are currently WES Ecosystem Fund recipients. The new investment is meant to help women entrepreneurs across the country navigate the current climate. The idea is to offer targeted support to organizations that are dedicated to supporting women business owners. The funding will help support business workshops, mentorship opportunities, and skills training to help women entrepreneurs adapt to a digital marketplace. COVID-19 has revealed women entrepreneurs are particularly vulnerable because of several factors: they tend to run smaller businesses, are less capitalized, and are heavily concentrated in the service sector. On top of that, many women are now shouldering child-care as a result of school closures and elder care in this time of isolation and social distancing.
The U.S. Small Business Administration awarded $300,000 in grants to three organizations offering entrepreneurship training to women service members, veterans, and military spouses on May 6th,2020. The funding opportunity offered by SBA's Office of Veterans Business Development supports each organization's entrepreneurial programs for women who serve in the military and veteran communities. Each awardee was chosen based on their demonstrated history of and commitment to providing training programs and resources to women. Women veterans represent a fast-growing segment of the veteran population. As this number grows, more and more women veterans continue to serve their country by becoming small business owners. As women veterans, service members, and spouses continue to contribute significantly to our economy, SBA is eager to fund organizations that will support them through their entrepreneurial journey and set them up for success.
