  • The Morrison Government opened the Australia-Germany Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Incubator (HyGATE), in March 2022. The HyGATE initiative will support real-world pilot, trial and demonstration projects that bring together Australian and German industry and research partners to deliver innovative hydrogen technology projects. Australia aims to be a major producer and exporter of clean hydrogen by 2030, while Germany holds expertise in hydrogen technology and plans to import significant quantities of hydrogen in the future.

Last year the Government, through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), announced a funding commitment of $50 million to invest in new renewable hydrogen supply chain projects, with Germany committing an additional €50 million. Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction of Australia Angus Taylor said the HyGATE initiative will help to bring the cost of hydrogen down through international collaboration.
